Social Programme – Discover Munich
Munich has much more to offer beyond the conference venue. We encourage you to take some time during the week to explore the city, discover its museums and historic sites, enjoy the English Garden, and experience a little Bavarian culture along the way.
Whether you are interested in archaeology and ancient cultures, Munich’s complex 20th-century history, or simply looking for a relaxing walk and a traditional beer garden, there are plenty of opportunities to make the most of your stay.
Museums & Culture
Staatliches Museum Ägyptischer Kunst
A highlight for all our participants will be the State Museum of Egyptian Art (Staatliches Museum Ägyptischer Kunst). The museum houses one of the most important collections of Egyptian art in Germany, ranging from monumental sculpture and reliefs to everyday objects and works of art spanning several millennia. Including a very nice collection of artefacts from ancient Sudan!
Free admission: Conference participants can visit the museum free of charge by presenting their conference badge.
Saturday special: On Saturday, we will offer organised group tours through the exhibition. Places are limited, so please sign up at the conference registration desk if you would like to join.
Munich Documentation Center for the History of National Socialism
The Munich Documentation Center for the History of National Socialism (NS-Dokumentationszentrum) offers an important opportunity to engage with Munich’s history and its role in the rise of National Socialism.
Located on the former site of the Nazi Party headquarters, the permanent exhibition Munich and National Socialism explores the origins and rise of National Socialism in Munich, the city’s particular role during the Nazi dictatorship, and the ways in which this history has been confronted since 1945. Exhibition texts are available in both German and English.
Admission is free, and no ticket or advance booking is required for individual visitors. The center is open Tuesday–Sunday, 10:00–19:00.
Archäologische Staatssammlung
For those who would like to continue their archaeological journey, the Archäologische Staatssammlung is another excellent choice. The museum presents archaeological discoveries from Bavaria and provides fascinating insights into the region’s history from prehistoric times through the Roman period and beyond. Its location makes it particularly easy to combine with a walk through the English Garden: the museum is situated in Lehel, right next to the park and only around 300 metres from the famous Eisbachwelle. Opening hours: Tuesday–Saturday, 10:00–17:00; Sunday, 10:00–19:00. The museum is closed on Mondays.Saturday Excursion: Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Site
On Saturday, we will offer an organised excursion to the Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Site (KZ-Gedenkstätte Dachau). A visit to Dachau is a very different experience from the other social activities of the conference. It offers an opportunity for reflection and for engaging directly with an important and difficult chapter of European history. Important: Only 30 places are available for the guided tour on Saturday. If you would like to participate, please sign up at the conference registration desk as early as possible. Individual visits are also possible. Admission to the Memorial Site, exhibitions and grounds is free of charge, and no advance appointment is required. The Memorial Site is open daily from 09:00–17:00. Please note that the Memorial Site deals with the history of the Dachau concentration camp and includes content that may be emotionally difficult.Walks, Beer & Bavarian Life
The Eisbachwelle
Start your walk at the Eisbachwelle, Munich’s famous standing wave. Surfers have been riding the powerful river wave here for decades — even though you are far from the sea!
From there, simply follow the paths north through the English Garden. It is an easy and scenic way to experience one of Munich’s most characteristic landscapes while getting away from the conference programme for a while.
Chinesischer Turm
Looking for a classic Munich beer garden experience? Stop at the Chinesischer Turm, one of the best-known landmarks in the English Garden. The large beer garden beneath the historic Chinese Tower is a great place to enjoy a cold beer, traditional Bavarian food and the relaxed atmosphere of Munich.Seehaus
Another popular stop in the English Garden is Seehaus, beautifully situated beside the Kleinhesseloher See. It is an ideal place to pause for a drink, lunch or coffee while enjoying the view over the lake.Saturday Afternoon: Social Get-Together at Aumeister
On Saturday afternoon, we invite you to join us for an informal conference get-together at Aumeister, one of Munich’s traditional beer gardens at the northern end of the English Garden. Come along for a drink, some Bavarian food and, most importantly, the opportunity to meet fellow participants in a relaxed setting away from the conference rooms. The beer garden is surrounded by old chestnut trees and offers plenty of space for groups to sit together. For those who would like to experience the English Garden, we will walk together from the city through the park to Aumeister. This walk of c. 60-75min is a great opportunity to stretch your legs, chat with other conference participants and see a different side of Munich along the way.
Prefer public transport?
No problem. You can also make your own way to Aumeister by public transport. The easiest option is the U6 to Studentenstadt, followed by a walk through the northern part of the English Garden.
